After his ordination, Thomas Craven was assigned to San Miguel Arcangel Parish in Naranjito, Puerto Rico from September 1956 to June 1957.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia sent Fr. Tom to Naranjito, a small town, so he could learn Spanish. In addition to being the assistant pastor at the church, Fr. Tom also taught at the local high school. He is pictured here with some of the students.
After returning to Philadelphia, Fr. Tom put his language skills to good use. He held two key posts in Hispanic Catholic affairs in the Archdiocese: director of Casa del Carmen, the Catholic social service center for Hispanics, from 1969 to 1983; and director of the Hispanic Apostolate, from 1975 to 1983.
Fr. Tom continued to serve Hispanic populations in his later assignments as well.
