I keep finding more and more information about Fr. Joseph McDonald, my great-uncle. Here is an article that appeared on the front page of the Pottstown Mercury, Pottsown, Pennsylvania, October 10, 1939.
Fr. McDonald was pastor of St. Aloysius from 1936 to 1944. In July of 2013, the parish secretary kindly emailed me a few pages of the parish history that mentioned my great-uncle.
I learned that during World War II, the needs of the war effort helped industrial Pottstown emerge from the Great Depression. As Pottstown revived so did the parish’s financial stability. Fr. McDonald planned to use the extra funds to expand the parochial school. The war, however, kept the materials for the project in short supply. The school expansion didn’t happen.
But I am very happy to see my great-uncle’s name associated with praying for peace.
And now I have a new picture of him, too.
