Ciocia Hattie

Ciocia Hattie

Hedwig Janicki was the sister of my Mom’s mother. We called her Ciocia Hattie, ciocia being the Polish word for aunt (it is pronounced, more or less, as choy’-cha).

Ciocia Hattie was born in 1919 and died in 1996. She lived her entire life in Wilmington. She worked in a sewing factory and was a very accomplished seamstress.

I love this portrait of her. It is a postcard picture from Blakemore Studio on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ. I don’t know when it was taken, probably in the 1940’s.
