As a teenager, Grandmom studied the Palmer Method and received a certificate of excellence for proficiency in Rapid Legible Business Writing.
What I find interesting about her certificate is that it was given in New York City on June 5, 1913. This is a year before she graduated from high school in Williamstown, Pennsylvania.
Grandmom must have been living for a time in New York with her cousin Deed (Annie), the daughter of Edwin Powers and Katherine Doyle (the sister of Grandmom’s mother).
The certificate is signed by Austin Norman Palmer (December 22, 1860 – November 16, 1927), who innovated the field of penmanship with the development of the Palmer method of script (source: Wikipedia).
