According to the 1900 Federal Census, my great-grandfather, William C. McDonald, and his family were living as renters at 933 South Street in Philadelphia.
I found a real estate transfer that shows he bought the property a few years later. This is from the Philadelphia Inquirer, Saturday, May 21, 1904.
My great-grandfather worked in a hardware store. I wonder if the store was on the first floor and he and his family lived above it.
The 1910 Census shows that he was renting out the adjoining property at 931 South Street to a family and several boarders. By the way, I noticed that my great-grandfather’s son, William Jr., was the census taker for that ward of the city.
The photo below is from Google Maps and shows what the property looks like today, 110 years later.
