House Mass

The parish history of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Williamstown, Pennsylvania relates the following:

“Father Simpson will be remembered for his kindness and visits to the sick. He instituted the ‘House Mass’ in the home for the sick and infirm. The first of its kind was at the home of Mary Craven.”

Mary Craven was my Aunt Mame. She and Grandmom lived in the Craven family home. I remember Aunt Mame being homebound in her later years. Having Mass celebrated in her home must have been greatly appreciated. I am sure Grandmom (pictured below) felt extremely honored to host the first House Mass in the parish community.

Fr. Thomas J. Simpson became pastor of Sacred Heart in 1967. I am guessing these photos were taken in the late ‘60’s or early ‘70’s.
