On the left is my great-great-grandmother, Veronica Czerski. I have her birthplace as Plock, Mazowieckie, Poland. Next to her is one of her daughters.
As far as I know, Veronica and her husband, Jan Rybinski, had seven children. Three died in infancy. One of their daughters, Marya, emigrated to the United States in 1913 when she was 17 years old. She is my maternal great-grandmother.
This photo was taken in 1943 in Poland. When I look at Veronica, I am drawn to her strong hands and severe black dress. Her daughter’s hand across her shoulder softens the image.
